Press ReleaseThe Starkville Area Arts Council has awarded matching funds to help Amy Burton (of Starkville) bring Atlanta-based dance company Moving in the Spirit to Starkville as part of their June 2020 Tour. SAAC will match donations made in January 2020 up to $1,000. On June 8-10, 2020, Moving in the Spirit will offer free dance workshops and performances for local youth and adults. The workshops help participants express themselves through dance and physical movement and include exercises on conflict resolution, self-esteem, and interpersonal skills. Dance is not always an available outlet, especially for those who can’t afford lessons, so programs like these are critical to youth in low- and moderate-income population areas.
SAAC’s grant awards fund art-related projects that 1) fall outside of its customary initiatives and 2) help build a community through art. Moving in the Spirit’s dance workshops align with SAAC’s arts education goals and initiatives by sparking creativity and creating access for youth in Oktibbeha County. This is a matching grant: funds given to the organization (MITS) during January 2020 will be matched by SAAC up to $1,000.
