What’s a barn quilt?
Barn Quilts are colorful, painted plywood or metal squares featuring a single quilt block. Traverse the by-ways of rural America, and chances are that you’ll notice them on the sides of historic barns and buildings. Highlighting both the art of quilting and America’s agricultural roots, more than 4,000 of these works of art have been created, often based on historic patterns of a particular region. Since 2001, barn quilt trails have led eager tourists on rural scavenger hunts across the country in search of these masterpieces.
Initiated by the Starkville Area Arts Council, the Oktibbeha County Barn Quilt Trail currently extends from the city of Starkville, continuing south along Oktoc Road to the Noxubee Refuge Visitor’s Center. The trail is a collaborative effort involving the SAAC, Mississippi State University students and faculty via the MSU Center for the Advancement of Service-Learning Excellence, and several local individuals, businesses, and community organizations. We invite visitors and residents, alike, to explore the trail. Local residents are encouraged to join by creating their own barn quilt squares. |
