Starkville Sightings

Open call for submissions for Starkville Sightings, our next SAAC group show! The submission deadline is February 5, 2023.

To go along with what the GSDP is all about, the theme of this exhibit is Starkville. What do you think of when you picture our little college town? A classic Starkville building or landmark? A revered local? An annual community gathering? We want to see how you interpret the sights of Starkville through your artwork. The interpretation can be literal or conceptual, but be aware that works not related to the theme will not be accepted.

NOTE: Only submit ONE work per submission. Artists can submit up to 3 works by submitting additional forms. All mediums accepted.

This show will be a HYBRID show: works will be on display in the Starkville Area Arts Council gallery as well as online. This is a six-month exhibit that will run from February 21, 2023, to August 7, 2023.

Press Release

The Starkville Area Arts Council is excited to announce our first Art in Public Places (AiPP) Exhibit of 2023, New Beginnings, a solo exhibit featuring artist Samuel Lawson Jr. The exhibit will be on display at Starkville Area Arts Council beginning beginning Monday, January 9, 2023.

The exhibit will kick-off with a reception held on Tuesday, January 10, from 5:30-7 pm at Starkville Arts Council's new office space in downtown Starkville. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be provided by SAAC to reception attendees.

This exhibit will feature works by Lawson, a local artist in Starkville MS. Originally from Greenville MS, Lawson received his Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting from Mississippi State University. He has been an active artist as well as serving on Boards including Board of Directors for Starkville Area Arts Council and the Magnolia Independent Film Festival, as well as serving on the SAAC Arts in Public Places Committee.

"We are so excited to finally start hosting events in our new space," said SAAC Program Coordinator, Juliette Reid. "This new space allows us to really expand our AiPP exhibits to display larger works, as well as more ceramics and sculptural works that could not display in previous AiPP shows."

This exhibit will be on display in-person and online on the SAAC website (starkvillearts.net/creativeeconomy) from January 9 - March 6, 2023, at Starkville Area Art's Council's office at 122 East Main Street.

As part of SAAC’s AiPP series, works may be listed for sale. SAAC provides reception and publicity, handles the collecting and reporting of MS State Sales Taxes on behalf of the artist for any works sold while taking a substantially reduced commission (20% instead of 50% usually charged by galleries). The artist keeps 80% of the proceeds. Please contact SAAC for more information on purchasing works (arts@starkvillearts.org).
