 "Floral Medley" is 84"x84" and is entirely hand~stitched; from the embroidering to the quilting, Sharon Bauman lovingly stitched it completely by hand. Come see for yourself! Starting Tuesday afternoon, on December 16th, "Floral Medley" will be on display for you to inspect at the BookMart & Cafe' DownTown on Main Street.
Then, you can purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win this quilt. The tickets are $3 each or you can increase your chances of winning while saving money, get four {{4}} for $10. The raffle tickets make excellent stocking stuffers, especially for those you can't ever find the exact right gift. This quilt is large enough to fit the top of a king~sized bed. If you'd like a lil drape, this quilt's ribboned border falls over the edge of both sides and the foot of a queen~sized bed with amble room to tuck your pillows in. If your bed is much smaller, then you might want to consider attaching a pocket to the quilt and displaying it across a wall in your home. Sharon Bauman, the quilter, had donated this to the Starkville Area Arts Council in October. As a child, she watched her mother and aunts quilt often. As a teenager, she stitched her first quilt with her mother. It was a family tradition to continue to hand~stitch the Pennsylvania creations, so Sharon had a lot to live up to! About seventeen years ago, Sharon moved to the beautiful Smoky Mountains of Tennessee to manage craft shops that featured individual vendors who valued handcrafted arts and items. Upon retirement, Sharon moved to the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas. While there, she was able to devote the time and energy to the wonderful tradition of hand~quilting, having found her true calling. Sharon's quilts have only been given to family and friends, never sold. This is the only time she has donated a quilt to an organization for fundraising purposes. Her passion for quilting is easily seen when YOU inspect the quality of her work. See you soon!! Come by the BookMart & Cafe' on Main Street, the quilt will be on display. Starkville Area Arts Council has awarded nearly $5,000 in grants this year to local schools for support of projects in the arts according to the SAAC Education Committee Chair Henri Sue Kennard and committee members Ellen Boles, Joan Butler, Cristy Cater, Annette Deason, and Nancy Hargrove. The grants are used for innovative projects incorporating the visual arts, music, theatre, dance, or literature in the curriculum. Most of these projects would not be possible without the additional funds. Classroom grants of up to $200 were awarded to classroom teachers for projects that affect only one class of students. General grants of up to $500 were awarded for projects that affect several classes, the entire school, or that may affect students for many years. Any faculty member or administrator was eligible to apply for the grants. We appreciate all you do for the kids in the Starkville area. We're looking forward to seeing these programs and productions throughout this academic year. Starkville Area Arts Council relies on membership dues and several events to raise the funds for the arts in education grants, the summer training arts scholarships, the collegiate arts scholarships, and the community arts grants. Fundraising events include the annual SAAC Gala, Everything Garden Expo, Cotton District Arts Festival, Artists Studio Tour, and Forks & Corks. Also grants from the City of Starkville, Oktibbeha County, the Starkville Convention and Visitors Bureau/GSDP, the Mississippi Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts help to support these programs. It is through the strong support of the community that SAAC is capable of ensuring the future of the arts. Starkville Area Arts Council is happy to help support the programs and activities of gifted teachers, students, artists, community art educators and entertainers. The next application process for Arts in Education Grants will begin in August.
