Press Release

Starkville Area Arts Council is eager to announce the next Art in Public Places Exhibit with a kick-off reception on Thursday, September 12 at 5:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Partnership in downtown Starkville.

This Exhibit, hosted in collaboration with the Mississippi Arts Commission, will highlight the work of Starkville photographer Dominic Lippillo, who received a 2018 South Arts State Fellowship recipient for the series “Stories We Tell Ourselves.”

“The Mississippi Arts Commission is proud to partner with Starkville Area Arts Council to honor Dominic Lippillo, a very talented photographer,” said Malcolm White, executive director of the Mississippi Arts Commission. “South Arts' Southern Prize and State Fellowship program has served to shine a light on the South's most gifted visual artists. For the past several years, Mississippi's State Fellows, including Dominic, have showcased very strong work through this program, ultimately furthering their own careers as well as raising our state's profile for modern visual art.”

“I am honored to have received the 2018 South Arts State Fellowship for Mississippi. This award allowed me to travel to East Haddam, CT, where I was an artist-in-residence at the I-Park Foundation from September 12 – October 8, 2018. During my residency, I continued working on the “Stories We Tell Ourselves” series. The award also helped me prepare photographs for solo exhibitions at Orange Coast College, Manifest Gallery, Amarillo College, and Mississippi State University. None of this would have been possible without the generous South Arts award. I will always be grateful to have been a fellowship recipient.”

“Dominic’s photographs create fantastic stories for the viewer to explore,” says SAAC Executive Director John W. Bateman. “His work is simply more evidence of the tremendous talent that exists here in Starkville. We’re honored and excited to share his work, particularly in collaboration with the Mississippi Arts Commission.”

“The way Dominic layers his images and crafts visual stories is remarkable,” said Suzette M. Surkamer, executive director of South Arts. “His creative artistry really stood out during our jury process, and we are honored to support him and his work.”

As part of SAAC’s AiPP series, works may be listed for sale. SAAC collects and pays sales taxes on behalf of the artist for any work sold, and The artist keeps 80% of the proceeds. This Exhibit will run until November 11. Works will be on display in the lobby of the Greater Starkville Development Partnership in downtown Starkville.
