Artist Statement

Picture
Samuel Lawson Jr. is a local artist in Starkville, MS. Originally from Greenville, MS, Samuel completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in painting from Mississippi State University. His background growing up in the Delta part of Mississippi and being a musician ( percussionist ) has influenced his work greatly. Dorothy Vaughn, a retired art professor at Mississippi Valley State University, influenced his direct path to pursue the art field. Color, texture, and overlapping color play a major role in his abstract and more realistic work. His work implies actual and implied texture on the painted surface through a variety of media, including watercolor, acrylic, oils, and colored pencil. Samuel is an active artist in the Starkville area and most recently had work accepted in the Greenville Biennial Exhibition in Greenville MS, the Prairie Arts Festival in West Point MS, and the Cotton District Arts Festival in Starkville, MS.

Works on display in-person until March 6, 2023.
