Artist Statement

RALPH NULL is a mostly self taught painter who enjoys expressions of nature both realistic and impressionistic.  Ralph taught at Mississippi State University and retired as a professor emeritus in 1992
where he specialized in retail floriculture and floral design.  He has participated in many significant exhibitions throughout the world with his amazing floral designs and was the lead designer at several White House state dinners, presidential inaugurations, as well as international exhibitions in Norway, England, Japan, South Africa, Australia and Canada.  He was the floral director of the Victorian Exhibition at the Smithsonian which was a longtime permanent exhibit. He is the author of five books on floral design and florist business practices.

Having been a sometimes painter, he love of painting was awakened when a friend insisted he study with Judy Hanson while he was in a long cancer recovery in 1999.  Since that time he as been an off and on painter with most of his work of botanical interpretations as he was  inspired by Ms. Hanson loose natural style.  During the last few years he has developed a natural love of the impressionistic style due to its natural feelings and serenity.  Since February of 2020, almost daily he has worked numerous pieces as a refuge from the anxiety of the pandemic.  As an avid traveler having been to each of the USA states, almost all of Canada, as well as South and Central America, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia he is learning to travel with his mind and a brush full of vibrant paint as he is still “stranded”, due to the uncertain  and turbulent travel options today.
